Fed: Cherry says Greig a nice bloke but not leader material

Australian Democrats Senator JOHN CHERRY says interim leader BRIAN GREIG is a nicebloke, but probably not the best person to maximise party prospects at the next election.

Senator CHERRY says he accepts the national executive's decision to appoint SENATORGreg to temporarily fill the leadership vacancy, but he doesn't agree with it.

He says deputy leader ADEN RIDGEWAY is the best person to replace former leader NATASHASTOTT DESPOJA, who resigned after the so-called gang-of-four senators -- including SenatorsCHERRY and RIDGEWAY -- voted to adopt a party reform plan.

Senator CHERRY has denied on the Ten Network that a party split is on the cards, sayingit's far too early to talk about such things.

He says he loves the party and the common sense of most members, but there's an intolerantminority which has made life very difficult for him and fellow senators.
