WA; Perth man murdered in Zimbabwe

A Perth man has been murdered by armed robbers in Zimbabwe.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) says the man, believed to be 51-year-old
PHILLIP LAING, was killed on Friday in the Honde Valley.

He was one of seven people abducted from the British company for which they worked.

A DFAT spokesman says initial advice is the man was killed during an armed robbery.

The department cannot confirm reports he had acid poured down his throat and was left
tied to a tree.

The fate of the other kidnapped workers is unclear.

The Australian High Commission in Harare has formally notified local authorities of
the Australian government's desire to see a prompt and thorough investigation.

The Sydney Morning Herald says Mr LAING was chief accountant with Eastern Highlands Plantations.

The paper says he's survived by a wife and two young children.
